FFAANNGGRRLL MIX TAPE 1: All Girl Summer Fun Mix (Click the picture!)
Tracklisting (for those who can’t see the image):
Plumtree- Go!
Charlotte Hatherley- Summer
The Breeders- Saints
Shop Assistants- Safety Net
Novella- Santiago
Tiger Trap- Super Crush
The Pin Ups- Lookin’ For Boys
Shannon and the Clams- Hunk Hunt
Gore Gore Girls- I’m Gonna Get You Yet
Trash Kit- Sun Spots
All Girl Summer Fun Band- Jason Lee
Henry’s Dress- Target Practice
Cub- NYC
It’s about time I put this up here as the sun has finally shown itself over the past week.
In terms of the song choices, I think Plumtree’s “Go!” is the perfect start to anything and should be used on every soundtrack (and not just for Scott Pilgrim). Charlotte Hatherley’s “Summer” is actually kind of sad, but it’s hopeful and that’s what the beginning of summer has always felt like. The middle is the most fun part of course, and by the end it’s just nostalgia and memories (Cub’s “NYC”). I feel like I’m selling one of those really bad compilation ads on TV.
This is something I made to contribute to my friend Jaz’s zine, which should be finished and released shortly. As soon as I have any copies, I will be sure to post about it here in case anyone would like one!

Some day soon we will revive this blog. In the mean time, here is a mix one of our friends made! You should check it out, and check out her blog, which is all about highlighting awesome female/female-fronted bands.

MFF#27 High Maintenance Machines
This doesn’t really require much explanation. It’s a compilation of my favourite songs by The Mountain Goats, just because I had felt like doing this for a while. Also Rob hates them, and it’s always fun to try to bother Rob.
It’s a highly subjective collection, and they have an absolutely ridiculous number of albums I haven’t even listened to, but these are my favourites and this is probably a pretty good introduction to The Mountain Goats (even if it will be obvious to fans what kind of Mountain Goats song I like best).
Here is the tracklist:
Prowl Great Cain
Dilaudid
No Children
Estate Sale Sign
High Hawk Season
Dinu Lipatti’s Bones
Colour In Your Cheeks
Jam Eater Blues
Jenny
Going To Georgia
The Best Ever Death Metal Band
This Year
Dance Music
Mountain Goats Shirt song (Live)
See America Right
Lion’s Teeth
Oceanographer’s Choice
No Children (live a capella version)
As always, click the picture to download it. It is not all tagged up properly like Rob’s are, but there is a .m3u file that will arrange everything for you in your media player.
Oh, and the cover is a picture of John Darnielle that I took.

MFF#24: Matthew Boycott-Garnett Has Got What You Need
Matt B-G, officially my favourite person with six Ts in his name, puts on the most amazing shows ever. Carefully Planned and Everything You Need are two of the coolest things currently going on in the UK because Matt is pretty much the most dedicated and caring gig promoter I’ve ever met. Everything he does is out of a pure love for music, which is much bigger than most people’s I know. He asked me to make him a mix so I wanted to give him some stuff he might not know in the hope that he’ll put the bands that are actually still together on near me some time soon, and also in the hope that I can out-obscure him. Click the cover to download, and ignore the fact that the files are messy in the folder, they’re all tagged right.
Tracklisting:
Jimmy Islip - 1990
Ten Speed Bicycle - Aw Man, I Don’t Know What I Did With My Dracula Bow Tie
National School - Saltwater Taffy
NGOD - Wardrobe
Richard Peter Snapes & The Lie Awakes - I’ve Made Up Stories

Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) - Year Of The Rabbit
Maps - To The Sky (M83 Mix)
Park Jefferson - Better Boy
Second Hand Stories - Frontiers
Jose Vanders - Faces Going Places
Jebediah - Harpoon
Parachutes - Grass Leaves
Metonym - Rooted

MFF#23 Rob’s Really Showing Me Up With These Clever Names
So Rob’s been making a whole bunch of great mixes for this blog, making me feel pretty guilty. So I’m putting a few together now, but first, I realised I still have the playlists for a bunch of mixes I made last year, and better yet, I’ve copied the artwork I made for them off my old computer!
This is a mixtape I made for Elen, who is in the top four raddest people I have met on the internet. In joint first place with the other three, probably. There are a couple of songs that have been on other mixes I’ve made, sorry about that, but like I said I will be making some new ones and they will have all new songs.Click to download the picture, as usual. Unlike Rob, I don’t know a way to change the track number tags on all of these that isn’t a massive pain in the arse (unless he just puts up with it) but there is a playlist file that should load them all up in order for you.
TRACKLIST:
BATS - Higgs Boson Particle
Adebisi Shank - Horse
Botch - Man The Ramparts
Melt-Banana - We Wll Rock You
Tom Waits - Kommienezuspadt
Black Eyes - A Pack Of Wolves
Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra - I Built Myself A Metal Bird
O’Death - Lowtide
Future Of The Left - Small Bones, Small Bodies
Noumenon - Algoresrhythm
Liars - Mr. You’re On Fire Mr.
Boredoms - Tomato Synthesiser
Dalek - Distorted Prose
Mr. Scruff - Jusjus (feat Roots Manuva)
Railcars - There Is Ice; It Is Blue
Hipster Youth - Pale Girls
The Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow’s Parties
The Magnetic Fields - Long-Forgotten Fairytale
You’re Only Massive - Everything (demo)

MFF#21: Time Travel Songs.
I made this for Jaimie quite a while ago. I was going to post it out to her but I couldn’t be bothered and it’s probably expensive anyway, so I’m just posting it up here instead, a few months late. It’s called Time Travel Songs because the time difference between America and England means that she lives in the past and I live in the future. Jaimie has spent many a day/night/whatever listening to me moan over Facebook chat and she honestly just rules, and I hope I can meet her some day for some serious partyin’ of some description. So I made her a mix of British bands, including some of the most British-sounding bands I could think of, as well as some stuff from America or whatever. I think it’s pretty good.
The last track is especially relevant because it’s a song by Dave House, a folk punk singer from the UK, recorded live in a living room in West Chester, PA, which is where she lives now. It’s likely that she’ll know the person who recorded it. Just goes to show what a small world we live in thanks to the internet sometimes, and how things and people can be connected in unexpected ways. Click the cover to download, and ignore the mess the folder is in as it’s all tagged properly.
Tracklist:
Pudge - Fuckin’ Yes Mate
Johnny Foreigner - Elegy For Post Teenage Living Parts 1 & 2
The 255s - In Northern England
Cats and Cats and Cats - Young Person’s Guide To Becoming A Rock Star
Winston Echo - Winchester Cathedral Choir
Frightened Rabbit - The Wrestle
Chrik - Music (Without A Condom)
Idlewild - When I Argue I See Shapes
Joan Of Arc - Bobby Burg & Nate Kinsella
Los Campesinos! - Too Many Flesh Suppers
Pop Unknown - Oh Kay
Mansions - Shoes On, Pants Off
Tubelord - Our First American Friends [Acoustic ‘For The Grandparents’ version]
Kyle Fischer - Too Soon To Know
Old Canes - Blue Eleanor
Tanaou - St. Crispin’s Got Our Backs
Boilermaker - Slow Down
One Toy Soldier - Dusty Shelves, Broken Blinds

I made this as a playlist for my own purposes initially, but decided to share it. It’s a bunch of sad covers of songs. Some of the songs were initially happy, some were initially sad, but these are some fairly miserable renditions of songs played by people who clearly really care about what they’re playing. I’ve included the original artist on the tracklisting below, in case you don’t know what’s what.
The album art for this one is weird. Sorry. I don’t really know where it came from. Click it to download this mix. Although the folder might look a bit of a mess, it’s all tagged up properly.

MFF#19: Fuck This Place
This mix was made for Heather. I don’t talk to her very much anymore, but I used to talk to her every day. For a large chunk of this summer, I was living in an absolutely horrible student flat that was empty for the summer whilst trying (and failing) to find a job and waiting to be able to move in to the house I live in now. In retrospect, it was probably a huge mistake. A whole bunch of things either happened or didn’t happen that made it an absolutely miserable time, and I think I probably took this out on Heather quite a bit by being a fairly massive jerk to her for pretty much no reason. I’m not surprised she doesn’t bother to talk to me anymore. So this was kind of intended as an apology mix CD, and it’s full of some of the songs I listened to most during my time there, as well as songs I thought she’d like. It’s a pretty good mix of more indie/pop stuff, with a few curveballs in there. Often gloomy, as you might guess from the name, but occasionally cheerful too. It’s all over the place, much like I was at the time.
The cover photo is the view from the window of my flat. I really, seriously, hated that place. Click the cover to download, and although the folder will look a bit messy, it’s all tagged up properly.
Tracklist:
The Remarkable Rocket - Helicopters
Rainer Maria - Mystery And Misery

He Sold Space - Like Father Like Son
Hunter Smith - Seriously, No Pressure

Matt Berry - One Track Lover
Dave House - Kingston’s Current [Live ‘At My Parents House’ version]

MFF#20: covers//downers
I made this as a playlist for my own purposes initially, but decided to share it. It’s a bunch of sad covers of songs. Some of the songs were initially happy, some were initially sad, but these are some fairly miserable renditions of songs played by people who clearly really care about what they’re playing. I’ve included the original artist on the tracklisting below, in case you don’t know what’s what.
The album art for this one is weird. Sorry. I don’t really know where it came from. Click it to download this mix. Although the folder might look a bit of a mess, it’s all tagged up properly.
Tracklist:
Sun Kil Moon - Exit Does Not Exist [Modest Mouse]
Frank Turner - Pay To Cum [Bad Brains]
Dave House - New Slang [The Shins]
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall [Oasis]
Owen - Never Meant [American Football]
Ben Marwood, Franz Nicolay & Frank Turner - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight [The Postal Service]
Bright Eyes - The Biggest Lie [Elliott Smith]
Minor2Major - Pints Of Guinness Make You Strong [Against Me!]
Matt King - Girl From The North Country [Bob Dylan]
Straylight Run - Peach, Plum, Pear [Joanna Newsom]
The Burning Paris - Asleep [The Smiths]
Xiu Xiu - Fast Car [Tracy Chapman]
